As the world approaches a population of 10 billion, sustainable food production becomes paramount. The 10 Billion Challenge Initiative aims to revolutionize the global food system through circular partnerships. In the next 30 years, the global population is projected to grow by 2 billion, with a significant urbanization shift. This raises the crucial question: How will ten billion people eat? This session will showcase the potential of megacities as future mines, where fishpoo from fish farms and sewage plants are utilized to capture phosphorus.

UN Sustainable Development Goal 12.3 aims to halve food loss and waste by 2030, but over a third of the world’s food still goes uneaten. It is a crisis, contributing to an estimated 10 percent of global greenhouse gas emissions. But it can also present an opportunity, a way to feed people in need, to save resources, and to generate new value streams. Speakers will highlight the importance of addressing food waste while outlining solutions to help countries build resilience and achieve SDG 12.3.
