Circular solutions from the Nordic built environment

The most sustainable buildings are the ones that are already built, but if they are not enough? The Nordics have long worked on transforming their buildings in a more sustainable and circular direction, but the building and construction sector is still one of the largest emitters of CO2 in the Nordic region. Regulations can be a driver for change and so can new sustainable sources of materials. These can be used to lower the footprint of building and construction. The session will showcase concrete solutions and tools that can be used in the building and construction and that can be replicated by others.

Collective Action for Gender Equality and Climate Justice

Overcoming Pushback Through Collaboration and Bridge Building
As challenges to addressing climate action and advancing gender equality increase globally, collective action that unites governments and grassroots movements is important to pushback against the pushback and make progress. The Nordic Council of Ministers is leading collective action both across the Nordic region and in partnership with the Feminist Action for Climate Justice (FACJ) Action Coalition, a global multi-stakeholder partnership inclusive of governments, grassroots women and youth led organizations, NGOs, philanthropies, financial institutions, UN agencies and the private sector convened by UN-Women under its Generation Equality Forum.
This event will bring together leaders from governments, UN agencies, civil society and youth and grassroots organizations to explore how to energize feminist climate justice approaches to collaboration, bridge building and collective action to advance climate change solutions that center gender equality. Topics covered will include concrete examples on collaborative gender-responsive approaches globally, regionally and nationally that span levels and types of organizations; how organizations are funding collaborative work; employing gender-responsive synergies across the Rio Conventions to build capacity and support for their work; and how to identify and overcome challenges.
This will be a dynamic dialogue with opportunities for audience engagement followed by a networking reception.

Circularity in Minerals – how can we use what we have already?

Recycling of CRM
Critical raw materials are necessary for the green transition, scarce, and in the hands of a few countries. We must work to recycle and reuse what minerals and metals we have excavated already, to have a more equitable distribution of resources. Nordic Ambitions in the area of recycling and reuse of critical raw materials are high, but both regulation and business are emerging. Who will use the recycled materials and who are the customers? Which concrete tools can be used to collect, sort and recycle raw materials in EE waste, industrial side streams and mining slugs. Showcasing Nordic EPR schemes, collection and sorting schemes as well as recycling technologies.
The politicians would like us to recycle, but who will use the material? Can the Nordics build their own refinery capacity and recycling of critical raw materials. We have many of the critical raw materials, we know how to recycle, but do we manage to take care of the materials that we have? Geopolitics and trade war in CRM, Nordic solutions

Growing the ocean economy sustainably: Can the Nordics lead the way?

Halfway through the ocean decade, we find ourselves at an inflection point for the world’s oceans. While marine activity is increasing across a variety of sectors, alarm bells are sounding for many indicators of ocean health. This underscores the need to balance growth with protection – in other words, to create a sustainable ocean economy in practice. Is the Nordic region, with its marine traditions and strong innovation ecosystems, best placed to lead this development? At this session, we will share concrete examples of blue innovations with green potential from across the Nordic region, while also providing a birds-eye view of where the Nordic ocean economy is now and where it might be headed in the future. We will also examine how the conundrum of ocean wealth versus ocean health is handled at the policy level.

Accelerating the transition

From humanitarian aid to climate finance
In fragile contexts, NGOs support ecosystem restoration and build the foundations for climate finance readiness. ODI climate finance expert will moderate a fire-side exploration of practical chanels for climate finance to conflict affected communities. How can these pathways be formalised to meet climate actors expectations? What have we learned and what are the opportunities that are yet to be concretised? With ICRAF, the Somalia BRCiS Consortium and the government of Danmark, it charts a path from aid to climate opportunity.

Ensuring Rights, Integrity and Impact in the Tropical Forests Forever Facility

Tropical deforestation is a complex socio-economic challenge that demands bold political and economic solutions. As discussions around the Tropical Forests Forever Facility (TFFF) advance, this event will explore how the initiative can become a transformative tool to protect forests, respect human rights, and strengthen Indigenous Peoples’ and Local Communities’ (IPs & LCs) land tenure.
Speakers will examine key design questions for the TFFF:
  • How to prevent human rights and environmental harms;
  • How to ensure the TFFF strengthens collective land rights and safeguards communities on the front lines of deforestation;
  • And how to guarantee that funds are used in ways that genuinely advance forest protection and rights-based climate action.
The panel will highlight current gaps, challenges, and opportunities to ensure the TFFF delivers on its promise — protecting tropical forests while empowering those who have protected them for generations.

School Meals: Food System Gamechanger

Brazil & the Nordics: Climate-Smart Innovations for Nutritious School Food
School meals can do more than we think to facilitate a sustainable development. All around the world there is a rapidly growing interest in developing new as well as in rethinking existing school meal programs. Brazil and the Nordics are good examples. Integration of food & climate literacy training in the programs, a transition to more plant based diets, engagement of young people in innovation efforts and food waste reduction strategies are just some of the elements that are taken up. All efforts that make a contribution to climate mitigation and that are underlining the fact the school meal programs are increasingly recognized as levers of a transition to more just and climate friendly food systems. This is the point of departure for the session.
