Unlocking Climate Resilience on Coral Islands

Innovative geoengineering for coral islands regaining water supply and climate resilience
This session provides insights into innovative solutions addressing the rising sea levels that threaten atoll islands. The Ruden AS project investigates the use of InSAR satellite data for the hydraulic uplifting of low-lying islands. This pioneering approach aims to mitigate the impacts of coastal erosion and flooding, offering a potential method for climate adaptation. By elevating these islands, they also regain their previous state with local access to freshwater beneath the island. The session will explore this groundbreaking strategy's technical feasibility and monitoring capabilities.

Launch of the Norwegian Global Emission Reduction Initiative

Driving ambition through international carbon cooperation
We know the total emission reductions in countries’ collective NDCs will not be sufficient to reach the Paris Agreement temperature target. We must do more.
By launching the Norwegian Global Emission Reduction Initiative, Norway reconfirms its commitment to contribute towards financing emission reductions and green growth in developing countries. The Initiative will operate under the Paris Agreement Article 6 and has the potential to trigger large-scale private sector investments. The
Norwegian Government has authorized the use of up to about 750 million USD for the work of the Initiative.

Towards Sustainable Consumption

The Need for Policies That Work - Examples from the Nordic Countries
In rich countries, consumption-based GHG emissions are typically higher than territorial GHG emissions. Both types of emissions have decreased but too slow to be in line with international agreements. In this seminar, a recent report from the Nordic Council of Ministers (Policy Options for Reducing Consumption-Based Emissions - A Nordic Survey) is presented. The report suggests efficient policies that address GHGs, other pollutants and also improve public health as well as environmental quality.
